A few decades back I forgot to pack my vise for a trip and thus was obliged to learn to tie by hand. Success intrigued me so I kept at it over the years. Eventually I discovered that fly tying vises are relatively recent tools and, freehand tying was and still is high art.

Nevertheless a vise remains practical, though traveling with most vises remained a challenge as none are truly compact.
